Built in 1954 by an architect unknown, this home displays elements of its contemporaries, with Marcel Breuer's Hooper House and Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West among them. Thick walls of stacked stone wrap the exterior of the home, flowing down and over the slope of the front yard, creating continuity with the landscape. A nearly perpendicular wing to the west adds dimension to the rectangular body of the building. The home perches high atop the lot, with a long, curved driveway creating separation from the street below. A post and beam design (a later addition by Architect Kin Ng) extends out from the shed roofline, framing the grand veranda in front like gills, reminding you to breathe in the scenery. And open-air breathing you'll do, as the veranda takes center stage in this home, stretching far and wide and offering unconditional views. Three sets of sliding doors bring the mountain and valley viewsâEUR"and fresh airâEUR"indoors. Inside, the space flows just as freely from living room to dining area to kitchen, as it does from outside in. Radiant heat installed in the ceiling lets you bask in the warmth from above like a summer sky, even when your pool is closed for the winter. A built-in wooden slide whisks you down to the ground floor, if you're so inclined (fulfilling a childhood yearning or two in the process). Three bedrooms, a family room, and den placed strategically downstairs afford an extra dose of privacy to the master bedroom on the main. In the forested backyard, a green screen of mature Austrian pines shelters you from all but the open sky above. Don't be surprised to find deer napping alongside you beneath the canopy of branches. Rather than by name, the architect left his mark upon this property in the faint etchings of children's footprints in the concrete surrounding the pool, and in whimsical figures cast in the iron railing spanning the front of the homeâEUR"hieroglyphs depicting a family who once lived, loved, and laughed here. The current owners have enjoyed and meticulously cared for the space for 30 years. Much of the interior is original and ready for the next generation to now make it theirs for the coming decades.
